Wind Power Station
Ultrasonic Inspection for Wind Turbine Blades, Towers, and Drivetrain Components
Wind turbines operate in harsh environments with cyclic mechanical loads that drive fatigue damage accumulation in blades, tower structures, bearings, and gearbox components over design lifetimes exceeding 20 years. Ultrasonic testing is the primary method for detecting internal defects in composite blades, weld flaws in steel towers, and subsurface damage in drivetrain components during both manufacturing and in-service inspection. CCNDT provides portable and automated ultrasonic solutions aligned with GB/T 42592 and international wind energy inspection standards.
Blade Composite Inspection
Wind turbine blades are large-scale composite structures made of GFRP and CFRP laminates with balsa or foam core sandwich constructions. Manufacturing defects such as dry spots, porosity, and adhesive bond-line disbonds, as well as in-service damage including lightning strike effects and fatigue-driven delamination, must be reliably detected. Ultrasonic pulse-echo and through-transmission methods, applied manually or via automated scanners, provide volumetric assessment of blade spar caps, shear webs, and trailing edge bonds.
- Spar cap, shear web, and skin laminate defect detection per GB/T 42592
- Adhesive bond-line integrity assessment at spar-to-shell and trailing edge joints
- Lightning damage and impact damage subsurface evaluation
- Both factory QA and field in-service inspection capabilities
Tower & Foundation Weld Inspection
Steel wind turbine towers consist of rolled shell sections joined by circumferential and longitudinal welds that must withstand extreme fatigue loading over the turbine's operational life. Ultrasonic phased array inspection of tower welds detects lack of fusion, slag inclusions, hydrogen cracking, and fatigue crack initiation at weld toes and root passes. Flange bolt connections and anchor cage embedments also require periodic ultrasonic assessment for crack development.
- Circumferential and longitudinal seam weld phased array inspection
- Fatigue crack detection at weld toe, root, and heat-affected zones
- Flange bolt and anchor bolt tension and crack assessment
- Foundation ring and transition piece weld examination
Drivetrain Component Testing
Main bearings, gearbox gears, and shafts in the wind turbine drivetrain are subject to high contact stresses and rolling contact fatigue. Ultrasonic testing detects subsurface initiated pitting, white etching cracks, and bearing raceway spalling before they progress to catastrophic failure. Regular ultrasonic condition monitoring of these components supports predictive maintenance strategies that reduce unplanned downtime and extend component service life.
- Main bearing and gearbox bearing raceway subsurface defect detection
- Gear tooth root crack and case-hardening depth assessment
- Shaft journal and coupling inspection for fatigue cracking
- Integration with vibration analysis for comprehensive drivetrain health monitoring
