Dual Tower Systems

Twin-Gantry Ultrasonic Inspection for Double-Curvature and Large Complex Parts

CCNDT dual tower C-scan systems employ two independent scanning towers positioned on opposite sides of the test piece, enabling synchronized through-transmission inspection of double-curvature panels, thick composite structures, and large assemblies. The dual-tower configuration provides simultaneous access to both part surfaces, maximizing inspection coverage and throughput for complex aerospace and industrial components.

Dual-Tower Architecture

Each tower carries its own multi-axis scanning mechanism and ultrasonic transducer, operating in coordinated synchronization. One tower houses the transmit probe while the other holds the receive probe, maintaining precise alignment through the part thickness even as both probes traverse complex surface contours. This architecture is essential for through-transmission inspection of parts with double curvature or variable thickness where single-sided access is insufficient.

  • Two independent scanning towers with synchronized motion
  • Coordinated transmit/receive probe alignment through part thickness
  • Essential for double-curvature and variable-thickness parts
  • Supports both immersion and squirter coupling configurations

Inspection Advantages

Through-transmission via dual towers provides superior sensitivity to bonding defects, porosity, and inclusions compared to single-sided pulse-echo methods, particularly in thick or highly attenuative materials. The dual-sided access also enables complete volumetric coverage without blind zones caused by geometric shadowing, and supports attenuation-based imaging that complements reflection-mode data.

  • Superior sensitivity to bonding defects in thick/attenuative materials
  • Complete volumetric coverage without geometric shadowing
  • Attenuation-based imaging complementing reflection data
  • Higher throughput than sequential single-sided scanning

Target Industries

Dual tower systems are primarily deployed in aerospace manufacturing for inspection of wing skins, fuselage barrel sections, engine nacelle components, and rocket motor cases. They also serve the wind energy sector for blade root and spar cap inspection, and the defense industry for armor plate and composite vehicle hull evaluation.
