Industrial Robot-Based Ultrasonic Inspection for Maximum Flexibility and Coverage
CCNDT robotic ultrasonic inspection systems integrate industrial multi-axis robots with ultrasonic transducers and C-scan software to automate inspection of parts with complex three-dimensional geometries. Leveraging the full dexterity of six-axis industrial manipulators, these systems achieve profiling scan paths that rigid gantry systems cannot replicate, enabling complete volumetric inspection of contoured, asymmetric, and multi-feature components.
Robot Integration
CCNDT robotic systems couple precision industrial robots with custom end-effectors carrying ultrasonic transducers and water-jet nozzles. Robot trajectories are programmed offline from CAD models or taught interactively, then synchronized with ultrasonic data acquisition to produce spatially registered C-scan images. The robot's six degrees of freedom allow the probe to maintain normal incidence and constant standoff on arbitrarily curved surfaces throughout the scan volume.
- Six-axis industrial robot with custom ultrasonic end-effector
- Offline CAD-based trajectory programming
- Synchronized robot motion and ultrasonic acquisition
- Normal incidence maintained on arbitrary 3D surfaces
- Water-jet coupling integrated into end-effector
Flexibility and Scalability
Unlike fixed-geometry gantry systems, robotic platforms can be rapidly reprogrammed for different part types, making them ideal for mixed-product manufacturing cells and job-shop environments. Multiple robots can be coordinated for dual-sided through-transmission inspection, and work cells can be expanded with additional robots, turntables, or linear tracks to handle increasingly complex inspection requirements.
- Rapid reprogramming for different part types
- Ideal for mixed-product and job-shop environments
- Multi-robot coordination for dual-sided inspection
- Expandable work cells with turntables and linear tracks
- Scalable from single-robot cells to multi-robot lines
Deployment Scenarios
Robotic ultrasonic systems are deployed for aero-engine blade and vane inspection, automotive body-in-white weld verification, additive manufacturing post-process evaluation, and wind turbine blade root inspection. Their flexibility makes them particularly valuable for R&D laboratories, prototype inspection, and low-to-medium volume production where part variety is high.
- Aero-engine blade and vane inspection
- Automotive body-in-white weld quality verification
- Additive manufacturing post-build evaluation
- Wind turbine blade root and transition zone inspection
- R&D labs and prototype inspection facilities
