High-Speed Ultrasonic Inspection for Automotive Critical Components
Automotive manufacturing demands high-volume, high-reliability non-destructive testing of safety-critical components including engine blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods, steering knuckles, brake rotors, and welded subassemblies. Ultrasonic testing detects internal casting defects, forging discontinuities, weld flaws, and heat treatment anomalies that could lead to premature failure under dynamic road loads. CCNDT provides automated ultrasonic inspection systems and portable instruments optimized for automotive production-line speeds and quality standards.
Casting & Forging Defect Detection
Engine blocks, cylinder heads, transmission cases, and suspension components are produced by casting and forging processes that can introduce shrinkage cavities, gas porosity, cold shuts, laps, and non-metallic inclusions. Automated ultrasonic C-scan systems inspect these components at production-line rates, providing 100% volumetric coverage of critical zones. Immersion and contact techniques are selected based on part geometry, material grain structure, and required sensitivity level.
- Engine block and cylinder head shrinkage cavity and porosity detection
- Crankshaft and connecting rod forging lap and inclusion inspection
- Steering knuckle and suspension arm internal defect screening
- Automated C-scan with statistical process control integration
Weld & Joint Integrity Verification
Modern vehicles contain thousands of spot welds, laser welds, MIG/MAG welds, and adhesive bonds joining body panels, chassis members, and safety structures. Ultrasonic spot weld testing evaluates nugget diameter and detects expulsion, stick welds, and insufficient penetration without destructive peel testing. Seam weld and structural adhesive bond inspection ensures crash-worthy joint performance in body-in-white and subframe assemblies.
- Resistance spot weld nugget sizing and quality classification
- Laser brazed seam and MIG weld defect detection
- Structural adhesive bond-line integrity assessment
- Non-destructive alternative to destructive weld coupon testing
Heat Treatment & Surface Hardness Verification
Case-hardened gears, induction-hardened shafts, and quenched-and-tempered components require verification of hardened layer depth and uniformity to ensure fatigue resistance. Ultrasonic backscatter and velocity measurement techniques provide non-destructive assessment of case depth and microstructural condition. These methods supplement or replace destructive sectioning for process control and incoming inspection of heat-treated automotive components.
- Induction-hardened shaft case depth measurement
- Carburized gear tooth hardened layer uniformity assessment
- Quench crack detection in heat-treated components
- Incoming inspection of supplier heat treatment quality
