Complex Geometry Systems

Multi-Axis Ultrasonic Inspection for Curved, Conical, and Irregular Components

CCNDT complex geometry inspection systems are engineered for parts whose shapes defy simple planar scanning—turbine disks, conical forgings, curved aerospace structures, and additively manufactured components with variable contours. Multi-axis motion platforms and adaptive probe tracking ensure consistent ultrasonic coupling and accurate imaging across continuously changing surface geometries.

Adaptive Scanning Technology

Complex geometry systems employ multi-degree-of-freedom motion platforms—ranging from dedicated rotary tables and tilt stages to full six-axis robotic arms—that dynamically adjust probe orientation and standoff distance to follow the part contour. Real-time surface tracking algorithms maintain optimal acoustic incidence angle and focal zone placement throughout the scan, ensuring uniform sensitivity regardless of local curvature.

  • Multi-DOF motion platforms: rotary tables, tilt stages, 6-axis robots
  • Real-time surface contour tracking and probe alignment
  • Optimal acoustic incidence maintained across variable curvature
  • CAD-based path planning for complex part geometries

Inspection Versatility

These systems handle a broad spectrum of non-planar parts including turbine disks and blades, conical and cylindrical forgings, curved composite shells, pipe elbows and tees, and additively manufactured components with organic shapes. Both water-immersion and water-jet coupling configurations are available, selected based on part size, geometry complexity, and required resolution.

  • Turbine disks, blades, and shafts
  • Conical and cylindrical forgings
  • Curved composite shells and sandwich structures
  • Pipe fittings: elbows, tees, and reducers
  • Additively manufactured components with organic contours

Quality Assurance Value

Complex geometry parts often represent the highest-value, most safety-critical components in aerospace, power generation, and oil & gas applications. Automated ultrasonic C-scan inspection replaces inconsistent manual scanning, providing complete volumetric coverage, quantitative defect sizing, and archived image records for certification and lifecycle traceability.

  • Complete volumetric coverage replacing manual scanning
  • Quantitative defect sizing and characterization
  • Archived C-scan images for certification and traceability
  • Repeatable, operator-independent inspection results
